Establish what you have
Find the model, serial number, age, and any available service history. Record leaks, corrosion, unusual noise, poor hot-water delivery, and the condition of accessible fittings without removing covers.
Ask a qualified water-heater provider to inspect the tank, drain valve, and related components. Tell them the heater has never been flushed so they can plan the work and possible follow-up.
Bradford White recommends qualified professional installation and service for its equipment. That is one example of why owner-care permission should be checked rather than assumed. Bradford White service guidance.
Ask what the proposed care would do
Request the manufacturer procedure and the reason for recommending it now. Ask whether observed sediment or a performance concern calls for routine flushing, another approved treatment, or diagnosis first.
Do not assume flushing will restore lost performance or remove every deposit. Have the provider explain the expected benefit and what remains uncertain.
Ask how the work will be performed safely, where hot water will discharge, and what happens if the drain is blocked or will not reseal. A questionable valve deserves a contingency in the quote.
Avoid an improvised start
Do not force a stuck valve, connect an unsuitable hose, or open fittings while the equipment is hot or energized. Fuel, electrical power, pressure, refill, and restart requirements belong to the actual procedure.
If the manual permits owner care, still consider whether you can identify all controls and carry out the task safely. Uncertain equipment condition or access is a good reason to use qualified service.
Compare care with repair or replacement
If the tank has a confirmed leak, ask for replacement evidence rather than a flush offered as a cure. If the heater is sound, compare the supported care scope with any repair needed.
Your next step is to request a condition check and a written care recommendation, including valve contingencies and result verification. Age and missed maintenance should inform the decision without deciding it alone.
