Water heaters
How often should my tankless water heater be descaled?
MGI’s recommendation: Build a written schedule from your heater’s instructions, your measured water conditions, and its use. “Every year” can be a starting point for a particular model, but it should not become a universal answer detached from the home.
Descaling means removing mineral buildup. Model-specific cleaning guidance. The heat exchanger is the part that transfers burner heat to the water. Manufacturer part definition.
There are several maintenance jobs, and their intervals need not be identical. A safety inspection, air-filter care, inlet-filter cleaning, and heat-exchanger descaling should be listed separately. A provider saying “maintenance twice a year” should explain which tasks happen at each visit and why.
For the RU models covered by Rinnai’s November 2018 N-series manual, the manufacturer calls for annual professional inspection and explains that hard water causes scale, with higher water temperatures able to accelerate it. Those statements support a model-specific plan. They do not establish your home’s hardness or justify an arbitrary flush interval. Rinnai N-series installation and operation manual, maintenance
Have the qualified provider identify the manual revision that applies to your model and any manufacturer guidance for your measured water quality. Ask what has actually been found during previous service: scale, debris, reduced flow, a maintenance reminder, or no notable buildup. A reminder and a physical diagnosis are different pieces of evidence.
The useful written routine should name:
- Each maintenance task and its intended interval.
- The water-test result and any applicable manufacturer limits.
- The symptoms that warrant service sooner.
- The approved cleaning method, and who performs it.
- How the next service will confirm the plan is working.
If two installers disagree, request the instruction or measured condition behind each recommendation. A shorter interval might be reasonable if documented conditions require it. A longer interval should also have a basis; missing maintenance is not a way to test how long the heater lasts.
Keep invoices, water-test results, and performance notes together. If the home has water treatment, include its settings and service history in the assessment, with its qualified provider responsible for changes.
Our next step would be to settle the routine once, in writing, then adjust it using actual findings. Confirm that any service appointment covers your exact tankless model and the specific maintenance tasks.
