Heat-pump water heaters

Why does my heat-pump water heater ask me to clean the condensate line every few weeks?

Homeowner guide · 2 min read

MGI’s recommendation: Ask for a drainage and alarm diagnosis before accepting repeated cleaning as the routine. A message every six to eight weeks deserves an explanation of what is actually recurring.

Condensate is water the heat pump collects from moisture in the surrounding air. DOE condensation explanation.

Save the exact message or code and the dates. Include whether you saw water, what the previous service removed or corrected, and how long the unit worked afterward. “Cleaned the line” is incomplete history unless the record shows what was found.

Rheem’s AP23657 Rev 04 hybrid manual distinguishes a blocked condensate path from a possible sensor problem when the pan is dry and no blockage is present. That distinction applies to the equipment covered by this manual, and it requires inspection. A message alone does not prove either condition. Rheem hybrid manual, A108 troubleshooting

Request a qualified visit that traces the complete route from the collection area to the receiving drain. Ask for a check of slope, low spots, restrictions, connections, and any pump or cold exposure. These are items to assess, not a diagnosis made from how often the message returns.

If the technician finds a blockage, ask where it was, what it contained, and why it returned. If drainage is clear, request the applicable sensor and control checks instead of another unsupported cleaning. A replacement sensor also needs test evidence; changing a part is not proof that it caused the complaint.

Have the provider demonstrate drainage during operation and document the result. The proposed correction should explain the original fault and how the repeated event is expected to be prevented. Any maintenance interval should be based on the model’s instructions and actual findings.

While waiting, avoid opening covers, adding cleaning chemicals, forcing tools into the line, or bypassing protection. If water is spilling or electrical equipment may be wet, keep away and request prompt qualified direction. A cleared display is not clearance to ignore water.

Keep the error photographs and service findings together so the next visit can compare the same problem over time. Our next step would be a root-cause appointment, followed by a demonstrated repair and a written care plan. Confirm the provider handles the exact heat-pump water-heater model and identify who owns any separate drain or electrical work.
