Find out what is actually running

Record the outdoor and indoor model numbers, thermostat model, setting, room temperature, and time of day. Is the indoor fan moving air, or is the outdoor equipment also running? Trane notes that a fan set to On can keep the blower running without an active cooling cycle. Trane continuous-running guidance.

Ask the installer to explain normal operation for the exact matched system. A variable-speed indoor fan alone does not tell you what type of compressor is outside. Request the controls setup and commissioning report, meaning the checks made when the system was put into service.

Our concern would rise if the room keeps getting colder than the setting, the unit ignores a normal stop command, or cooling has changed. Tell the technician that specifically. Leave wiring and service panels alone.

Turn the installation findings into a repair record

Ask the maintenance technician to document each gap with a photo, location, applicable requirement, and consequence. “Poor installation” is too broad to assign work. A specific finding lets the original installer respond.

Send that record to the installer and ask what it agrees needs correction, who will do it, and how completion will be verified. Keep installation terms and warranty paperwork handy. Do not assume a second company's assessment automatically establishes who pays.

We would avoid accepting a verbal “it is fine” without an answer to the documented findings. We would also avoid replacing new equipment before confirming whether a correctable installation or controls issue explains the concern.

Know when the follow-up is complete

Request a written record of the corrections and final operating checks. Compare room comfort and runtime under similar weather after the work. If a defect is disputed, an independent qualified assessment can help clarify the evidence.

Your next step is a joint operation-and-installation follow-up. It should end with a model-specific explanation of runtime and a documented resolution for each installation gap.
