How should I change an existing whole-home humidifier for the seasons?
Use the instructions for your exact humidifier and control. Our recommendation is to identify both before changing a damper or setting. A “summer/winter” handle, a manual dial, and an automatic control do different jobs, so a general rule can be wrong for the equipment you own.
Take photos of the humidifier label, the control, and any clearly labeled seasonal handle without opening electrical sections. Find the owner's instructions that match those parts. If the home is new to you or the setup is unclear, have a qualified humidification provider show you the seasonal routine and label the relevant owner controls.
AprilAire's current guidance illustrates the difference: its 400, 500, and 600 bypass series have a seasonal bypass damper; 700 and 800 models differ. Its manual controls and automatic controls also have different shutdown directions. The exact model, control mode, and instructions decide what you change. AprilAire's seasonal guidance.
For the season when moisture is needed, use measured room humidity and surface observations to judge the setting. Watch the colder rooms and windows, rather than only the control display. Water on windows or nearby surfaces is a reason to reduce added moisture and investigate, not raise the setting. EPA's humidifier guidance.
We would ask the provider to leave a short, model-specific record: which owner setting changes, when to check it again, which care tasks are due, and what would be abnormal. Include the normal expected water and drain behavior so you can distinguish operation from a leak. If the unit is automatic, ask how its outdoor input and room measurement are checked. Do not change installer wiring or sensor settings to force more output.
Seasonal shutdown is also a useful time to review care. Ask what is cleaned or replaced, whether you can safely do it, and who handles tasks beyond the owner instructions. Do not turn on an unfamiliar or previously leaking unit simply because the calendar says winter.
The next step is to match the model and control to their instructions, then confirm the specific care or assessment available from MGI or the humidification provider. A clear seasonal routine should let you know what to do, what to watch, and whom to call if it changes.
