What the equipment-only price leaves open
A furnace still needs to fit the home's heating demand, the available space, and the rest of the system. The quoted project can include removal, delivery, installation, controls, vent changes, applicable permits, startup checks, disposal, and contractor labor protection. Which items are actually needed is a home-specific question.
Correct sizing and verified airflow are part of quality installation. Paying for a cabinet without those checks does not establish that it will heat your home properly. ENERGY STAR installation guidance.
An equipment listing also may have different warranty terms or purchasing conditions. Read the actual model's warranty and ask the installer to explain who handles a covered parts issue, what labor is covered, and what costs are excluded. Do not infer those terms from the brand alone.
Ask for a scope breakdown you can use
You can request separate prices for equipment, labor, required associated work, and optional items. Some contractors price a package rather than disclose their internal purchasing costs. That does not remove your need for a clear included-work list and a full price.
Ask these practical questions:
- Does this include taking out the old furnace and disposing of it?
- What changes are needed to venting, controls, gas connections, or electrical service?
- Who obtains any required permit and arranges inspection?
- What operating checks will be recorded before the job is finished?
- What could change the price after work begins?
For work performed by another trade, ask who performs it, who arranges it, and whether its price is included. Airflow findings may require work outside MGI's service offering. A quote should identify that dependency without implying MGI offers duct work.
When a price difference deserves another estimate
If you understand the same scope and the prices still differ sharply, another written local estimate is useful. Compare the actual model, needed work, exclusions, warranty terms, and payment basis. A different home's Reddit price is a prompt to ask questions, not a current price benchmark.
A contractor's costs can explain part of an installed quote, but they do not prove that any particular quote is reasonable. Equally, a large gap from an online equipment listing does not establish price gouging. Let a matched comparison show whether you are buying the same result.
Your next step is to ask for the complete project scope and any separately priced alternatives. Keep the total visible, and judge the offer by what your home needs and what the agreement actually includes.
