How do I verify that a proposed air cleaner does not add ozone?

Homeowner guide · 2 min read

Ask for independent emissions evidence for the exact model, then verify the record with the issuer. Our recommendation is to avoid intentional ozone devices in occupied spaces and treat a “zero ozone” label as a specific test claim, not proof of every aspect of safety or cleaning.

Start with the full model number and configuration. Ask whether it uses ionization, plasma, ultraviolet light, a type of light used in some treatment devices, or another powered process, and request the maker's ozone and other byproduct reports. The report should identify the test method, setting, configuration, date, and laboratory. A general brand logo or a result for a different version is not enough.

UL Solutions explains that its ULE 2998 Zero Ozone Emissions validation means emissions stay below the quantifiable detection limit of 0.005 parts per million, or 5 parts per billion. It also identifies validated products in its SPOT product guide. This is a measured threshold, not a literal claim of no ozone molecules. UL's validation explanation.

Request the issuer's exact product listing and match it to what will be installed. Check the listed claim and any configuration limits. If a badge or report cannot be matched, have the seller resolve that before purchase. Do not infer that a different certification, electrical-safety mark, or company listing means this same emissions test was passed.

EPA warns that ozone can harm lungs and react with indoor chemicals to produce irritating byproducts. It also explains that an EPA establishment number is not an endorsement of an air cleaner's safety or effectiveness. EPA's ozone guidance.

We would keep three questions separate. Does this device meet the stated ozone-emission test? What evidence addresses other byproducts? What independent evidence shows that it removes the pollutant you want addressed under useful conditions? Passing the first does not answer the other two.

Ask the installer to confirm that the installed parts and settings match the tested configuration and that the owner can follow the care requirements. Do not disable or alter a powered device to recreate a test claim. If the evidence is incomplete, compare a supported alternative with clearer documentation.

The next step is to obtain the exact model, issuer record, reports, and installation proposal. Confirm MGI's agreed role in assessing or installing that equipment. We would favor a documented option without overstating what its badge proves. No emission certification can guarantee a symptom improvement or establish that all air in the home is safe.
