Indoor air quality
How can I add humidity in Colorado without creating mold conditions?
Add only as much moisture as the home can handle. Our recommendation is to measure first, make a small change, and watch for damp surfaces. Colorado's dry weather does not give every home the same safe setting. The coldest windows, walls, and rooms can limit how much moisture you should add.
Start with a humidity meter in the space where you feel dry. Keep it away from the humidifier's mist and compare readings over several days. Record the room temperature, outdoor weather, and any window moisture. Check bedrooms and colder rooms as well as the spot beside the control. One reading near the device should not set the whole-home plan.
EPA advises against indoor relative humidity above 50 percent and says to reduce humidification when condensation appears. That is an upper boundary, not a target every Colorado house should reach. EPA's home-humidifier guidance.
We would aim for the lowest setting that gives useful comfort without window water, damp walls, or wet material nearby. If those signs appear, reduce or stop added moisture and investigate. Do not keep raising the setting because the air still feels dry in one room. An environmental-health or building professional may need to assess a recurring moisture problem.
The equipment choice should follow the findings. A room humidifier lets you address a limited space, but its water and cleaning chores still need an owner. A central option needs a qualified provider to assess the heating system, controls, water connection, drain arrangement, and access for care. Have that provider identify the exact model and the seasonal operating limits before installation.
If you rent or live in a condominium, check who can approve changes to the system and building. A portable unit does not require a permanent HVAC alteration, but it still needs an appropriate location and the manufacturer's care instructions. Avoid adding a central system until permission and project responsibilities are clear.
For any proposal involving MGI, first confirm the particular humidification assessment or equipment task available. The quote should name who handles any separate plumbing, electrical, or building work. That keeps a useful comfort project from leaving you to arrange missing pieces later.
The next step is a small record: readings, room locations, window observations, and the existing humidifier's model if you have one. Use that evidence to decide whether you need added moisture, a different setting, or a moisture investigation. We would solve the measured need before buying a larger humidifier.
